Commis Chef – Restaurant located in Dubai Hills

Every head chef you have ever heard of started as a commis. It is the entry point into professional cooking, and it is where you learn the habits that decide how far you will go: speed, cleanliness, discipline and paying attention. A restaurant in Dubai Hills is now looking for a Commis Chef to join its kitchen team.

Dubai Hills is a busy, growing community with plenty of families, residents and visitors, so a restaurant there tends to stay lively. That means a kitchen that moves, and a commis who gets real experience rather than just watching from the corner.

What a Commis Chef does

You work under the chefs de partie and the head chef, helping the section run smoothly. A typical shift includes:

  • Preparing ingredients for service: washing, peeling, chopping, portioning and marinating
  • Setting up your station before service and breaking it down properly afterwards
  • Cooking and plating simple dishes following the recipes and standards you are given
  • Storing, labelling and rotating food correctly, first in, first out
  • Following food safety and hygiene rules, including temperature checks
  • Keeping your station, knives and equipment clean and organised
  • Helping with deliveries and stock checks
  • Listening, learning and taking feedback well, because that is how you move up

What the kitchen wants to see

  • Some experience in a professional kitchen, hotel or restaurant is preferred; keen beginners with the right attitude may also be considered
  • Good basic knife skills and knowledge of kitchen hygiene
  • A valid food handling or hygiene certificate is a big plus
  • The ability to work fast under pressure without cutting corners
  • Team spirit and respect for the chefs above you
  • Flexibility with split shifts, early starts, late nights and weekends
  • Being ready to join quickly and already based in the UAE usually helps

Why starting in a kitchen like this pays off

A commis who works hard and stays reliable can move to Demi Chef, Chef de Partie and beyond. Restaurants remember the people who turn up on time, work clean and never complain when the pass gets busy.

Ask at interview what cuisine the kitchen focuses on, which section you would start on, and what the training looks like. Good kitchens like candidates who ask smart questions.

A few tips before you apply

  • List the cuisines and sections you have worked on, such as cold, hot, pastry or grill
  • Mention your food hygiene certificate near the top
  • Be honest about your level; head chefs can tell quickly in a trial
  • If a cooking trial is offered, bring your own knives and arrive early
